Interview with Freya Beer

Freya Beer is an exciting up-and-coming singer-songwriter originally from London but currently living on the south coast of England. I got the chance to interview her as a part of the summer series here on the C Word, which I am really grateful for. Her music, to me, is ethereal and mesmerizing. If you haven’t heard her songs, it is a must. I hope you will enjoy reading the interview and learning something new about Freya, and that it will push you to listen to her songs. And thank you, Freya, for your time!

N: What is your dream collaboration with at the moment?

F: My dream collaboration at the moment would be Nick Cave. Because I like his style of music and songwriting and I think it would be an amazing opportunity to collaborate with someone of that calibre as I believe we share similar audiences

.

N: When you hit writer’s block what is the best remedy for you?

F: Whenever I feel uninspired to write I often go back to some of my favourite inspirational sources such as poetry and art books. At the moment I’ve been really enjoying reading a biography about the 60’s folk singer Buffy Sainte Marie.

N: What influences you the most when writing music?

F: My influences when writing my music tend to be poems, paintings and people. One of my earlier song’s Six Months was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painting “Proserpine” by the artist Rosetti who took inspiration from the Greek Myth surrounding Proserpine (the Greek goddess) who was trapped in the underworld for six months.

N: What’s the best part of being a performer in 2020?

F: The best part of being a performer is being able to connect to my audiences around the UK through online festivals and social media.

N: What is something you would say to your 15 year old self?

F: I would tell my 15 year old self that everything is going to work out and to continue writing and recording, because you don’t know who you’ll meet or is listening to your music.

N: What were your biggest inspirations while writing your debut album?

F: As always, art plays a huge part in my inspiration, whether that’s sonically or visually. I often take inspiration from Pre-Raphaelite paintings as I love the stories behind them and sometimes the story itself is enough to inspire the start of a song.
