First Impressions

What I Received

Afrique sent me a bottle of their original recipe vodka, and the first thing that caught my eye was the classy presentation. The vodka comes in a sleek and stylish black bottle that immediately gives off a premium vibe. It’s the kind of bottle that stands out on a shelf and sets the tone for the quality you can expect inside. The elegant design not only looks great but also reflects the care and craftsmanship that’s gone into creating the vodka itself. Afrique takes pride in every detail, right down to the packaging.

Instructions

You won’t find specific instructions on the bottle of Afrique Vodka, but don’t worry - that’s because vodka is versatile and easy to enjoy in a variety of ways. Whether you’re a vodka connoisseur or just getting started, the basics are the same, and it’s all about finding what you like best.

To truly appreciate the smoothness and subtle flavours of Afrique Vodka, start by chilling the bottle. Pop it in the fridge or freezer for a few hours before serving. Cold vodka not only feels refreshing but it supposedly enhances its natural sweetness and reduces any harshness, making each sip even more enjoyable. This simple step is key to unlocking the best flavour profile from your vodka, whether you’re sipping it neat, on the rocks, or mixing it into a cocktail.

Review

I’ll admit, I’m not usually a fan of the taste of vodka on its own. But when it comes to cocktails, that’s a whole different story! Whether it’s blending with fresh fruit juices, pairing with herbs, or just adding a splash of soda, vodka becomes the perfect canvas for a wide range of drinks. And that’s exactly why I love using it in cocktails—it’s versatile, adaptable, and can take on so many different flavours and personalities. So while I might not reach for a straight shot, hand me a cocktail shaker, and I’m all in!

Recommendations/Results

I tried Afrique Vodka as the base for a few different mixed drinks, and I have to say, it really shines in this role.

Even if straight vodka isn’t your thing, Afrique Vodka’s smooth and subtly sweet profile makes it an excellent foundation for cocktails. I experimented with a variety of recipes, and each one turned out delicious. The vodka blended seamlessly with other ingredients, enhancing the overall flavour without overpowering it.

I'd like to go on record and say that I made these drinks over a number of days - so no need to stage an intervention, I promise!

Each of my cocktails featured a double measure of Afrique Vodka, and since it’s summer, I decided to blend them all with ice for a refreshing twist.

First up, I kept it simple with a mix of vodka, pineapple and coconut-flavored juice, blended with ice for a smooth, tropical drink. It was like a holiday in a glass!

Next, I kicked things up a notch by blending the vodka with some frozen tropical fruits, more ice, and the same pineapple and coconut juice. The frozen fruit added a nice, slushy texture and extra fruity flavour that was perfect for a hot day.

Feeling a bit adventurous, I then tried my hand at a passionfruit martini. I combined a double measure of Afrique with one measure of Passoã, added a touch of vanilla syrup, and a tablespoon of lime juice, and then blended it all with ice. The result was a sweet and tangy drink that had just the right amount of zing.

Finally, I decided to go with a trusty Blue Lagoon. For this one, I mixed a double measure of vodka with a double measure of blue curaçao, added the juice of a lemon, lime, and orange, and then topped it off with lemonade. I garnished it with a maraschino cherry for a classic finish. This drink was bright, citrusy, and totally refreshing - perfect for sipping by the pool, or in England, with your feet in the paddling pool.

All in all, Afrique Vodka proved to be a versatile base for a variety of summer cocktails, each one more delicious than the last!

So, if you’re like me and prefer your vodka mixed rather than straight, don’t hesitate to use Afrique as your go-to cocktail base. It’s versatile, easy to mix, and brings out the best in every drink. Whether you’re hosting a party or just mixing up something for yourself, Afrique Vodka is a great choice for elevating your cocktails.

What is Afrique?

Afrique Vodka is more than just a drink; it’s a vibrant celebration of African heritage and entrepreneurial spirit. Launched by Beverley Annan-Forson and Jayne Doherty, two accomplished businesswomen from Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, this new vodka brand stands out in a crowded market with its unique blend of flavours and cultural significance.

From the outset, it’s clear that Afrique Vodka is a labour of love. The 18-month development process involved meticulous attention to detail, from selecting the sugar beet base for its gluten-free qualities to choosing the perfect natural flavours. The result is a 40% ABV vodka available in three distinct flavours: original, mango and papaya (or papita), and apple and coconut. Each flavour not only delivers a smooth and naturally sweet experience but also offers a nod to the diverse and rich agricultural products of Africa.

The heart of Afrique lies in its connection to the African continent. Beverley and Jayne have tapped into their Ghanaian roots, collaborating with farmers and growers from Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania to source the ingredients that give Afrique its distinct taste. This connection goes beyond just ingredients; a portion of the proceeds from Afrique will be channelled back to these communities, supporting local development and honouring the very roots that inspire the brand.

Jayne and Beverley’s passion for Africa is palpable in every aspect of Afrique. They describe their creation as "Africa in a Bottle," a celebration of the continent’s community, unity, and warmth. It’s refreshing to see a brand that doesn’t just pay lip service to its cultural roots but actively works to uplift and showcase the beauty of Africa.

Pricing & Where to Buy

Afrique Vodka is set to make a splash in the drinks market. At £30 a bottle, it’s positioned as a premium product, and rightfully so. The care, thought, and cultural pride that have gone into its creation make Afrique Vodka more than just a drink - it’s an experience, a story, and a celebration of African heritage.

Currently, the only place to get your hands on Afrique Vodka is directly through their official website. This exclusive online availability ensures that you’re getting the freshest bottles straight from the source.

Final reflections

I genuinely enjoyed my time reviewing Afrique Vodka, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The smoothness and subtle sweetness of this vodka make it an exceptional choice for anyone who loves crafting cocktails. Whether you're a seasoned mixologist or just someone who enjoys a good drink at home, Afrique Vodka is a versatile and high-quality base that elevates any cocktail. I found it to be incredibly adaptable, whether paired with tropical juices, blended with frozen fruits, or mixed into more intricate recipes.

Choosing sugar beet as the vodka base was a smart move. It gives the vodka a naturally sweet flavor that’s smoother and less harsh, so you can mix it into cocktails without needing to add any extra sweeteners.

If you're looking for a vodka that delivers on taste, I highly recommend giving Afrique Vodka a try. It’s a fantastic addition to any home bar and a great way to impress your guests with delicious, well-crafted cocktails.
