The hold that the show “Euphoria” has on todays generation

Since the release of Season 1 in June of 2019, it is clear to say that the glorious show Euphoria, starring Zendaya and Hunter Schaffer amongst many others, has grabbed the attention of young people all over the world.

With the show exploring a range of profound yet deep topics which tend to be avoided in many of today’s shows, there is a wild and deep insight into things such as drug and substance abuse, trans teenagers, sexual relationships, as well as sexual trauma. It’s a show that may not be for everyone, but with the amazing direction of Sam Levinson, it is one you’re bound to watch from beginning to end.

Following the story of a group of high schoolers all on different paths of life, the main problem with this show is relatability. This show has been so intricately constructed, that you are bound to find a part of yourself in at least one character, which is the main selling point for our generation. People love to relate to a glamorised version of their problems, which is exactly what Euphoria hands them on a silver platter. Regardless of whether it’s Cassie’s [Sydney Sweeney] daddy issues or Maddie’s [Alexa Demie] addictiveness to toxicity or even relating to the way that Rue [Zendaya] portrays love, there will be something to relate to, which makes it that much more special.

The show quickly gained popularity on all social media platforms, and even more quickly became associated with its dazzling visuals and soundtrack. The portrayal of drugs is one that has been critiqued a lot due to the over glamorisation it presents. Throughout the show we see the use of drugs such as Fentanyl, MDMA and Marijuana and we see the wide-ranging effects it has on the characters of the show. The scene where we are met with Rue’s character getting high for the first time, we see the euphoric experience she has, surrounded by a spinning room, flashing and colourful lights. Despite her depressing monologue in the background, this scene is still one that people are mesmerised by. The striking visuals in that scene, paired with Zendaya’s character wearing eye-catching sparkly makeup is one that had an impact on many, even though it’s caused by drugs.

As well as the show-stopping visuals that Euphoria has given us, the soundtrack is one that’s still in people playlists, 31 months after release. Appearances from artists like Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and even Beyonce on the track were ones that were unforgettable, however a special note is needed for Labrinth. Creating an album exclusively for this show, each song captures the exact mood, atmosphere, and moment in the most realistic and magnificent way possible. Labrinth does an amazing job at provoking feeling that resonates with the viewers just using a beat alone. That, piled on top of the grabbing Euphoria plot, is what really ties the whole show together.

With the new season coming out in less than a week, the internet is already going crazy with theories, predictions and wishes for the second Season of this enchanting show. Even though this show covers so many different topics that people may not feel comfortable with whilst watching, the idea and execution is truly one that transforms your perspective.

Season 2 of Euphoria premieres on January 9th. I’ll certainly be watching.
