What The Earth Knows
I’m back again,
four months later,
flying over the same red earth-
except this time, in reverse.
This time, I’m not flying away from you.
I’m flying towards you,
towards a possible future
I never imagined.
It feels strange
to glide above this spiritual ground again.
Guided by the spirits below,
by the beauty of rugged mountains,
by earth, scorched red
with blood and bone.
From this height, the land rippes
like veins-
a sleeping body in the ground,
its blood pulsing through the soil,
giving life,
sustaining it,
ending it.
The last time I was here,
my heart bled too.
Emotions spilling into the air at sunrise,
tears sinking into the dirt,
turning it crimson.
Dragonflies swarming.
The rock pulsing.
My breath rising.
Now,
from the oval of a plane window,
I watch lands unknown roll beneath me.
It unsettles me-
not because I fear them,
but because they reveal the fears within me.
The stark nakedness of truths
I keep hidden.
Even from myself.
So here’s my truth:
I’m a little bit terrified
that this will work out.
And equally petrified that it won’t.
And yet-
as much as I’m scared, I have faith.
Faith in connection,
faith in you,
faith in me.
I’ve made mistakes before.
Come on too strong,
put myself in places I knew I’d meet rejection.
But not now.
This time,
I follow my gut.
I don’t question.
I don’t ask why.
I don’t get tangled in the shape
of a future I can’t name.
Instead, I trust-
in me, in you, in the universe.
In the unexplained tingling feeling.
I choose to believe
in the present.
It won’t be perfect.
It won’t be easy.
It will take work.
It will take compromise.
But, together or not,
it will make us.
So as I sit here,
row 12, seat F,
watching the endless flat expanse below,
dreaming of the day we meet again,
I know - in the core of me,
in every fibre, in every cell-
that whatever happens,
we’ll be ok.
