This number now stands at 340,000 last year, which works out to a staggering 728% increase. This is fantastic to see as it is making what has always been seen as a male-dominated industry one that is more open, inclusive, and diverse.

One of the ways that construction has become more balanced in recent times is by encouraging girls and women to consider construction as a viable career with university and teaching programs. This has helped many to see that construction is an industry where there are many transferable skills that can help them thrive in construction, such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Additionally, many of the other technical, hands-on skills can be learned.

There are also many changes taking place within the industry that are helping women to feel more confident, welcome, and comfortable in what has traditionally been a male-dominated work environment. This includes things like construction companies and building sites adding more facilities and work wear being alerted to a better fit for women. There is also construction clothing made for women, such as site work boots that can offer protection and comfort while working.
