The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

★★★★

I cannot recommend this book enough. It is a real homage to all women out there who are empowered to follow their dreams and to be who they truly are.

This historical fiction follows the lives of two women, separated by two hundred years. There is Nella who runs a Victorian Apothecary and provides a vital service for women, and there is Caroline who is a modern-day aspiring historian, who finds a hidden artefact in the Thames. Whilst exposing the long-forgotten mystery that this artefact pertains to, Caroline also rediscovers herself in the process.

Penner does a wonderful job at setting the scene and explaining the rationale for the Apothecary. The Apothecary fills a vital gap in the medicinal needs of women, as well as providing poisons for them to dispose of the problem men in their lives. As the story unfolds, we are told why Nella has chosen to diversify the Apothecary in this way. It becomes clear that she has a sad and tragic past, and that this makes her want to help others who have suffered similar betrayals to her.

The Apothecary is Sarah Penner’s debut novel and yet the prose is of an excellent standard. The characters are very believable and the description of Victorian London is very convincing. A very much recommended book for lovers of historical fiction, or anyone who likes a book that has strong female characters. Although, the ending will leave you wanting more!
