How did you get to where you are today? Tell us about your journey.
I’ve been performing for some time, singing, acting, dancing. I’ve always had a fascination for the arts. A shy kid, being on stage was an escape, something I also found in reading books and writing. Growing up, I didn’t think a career as an artist was something that was possible—although very much what I wanted, it always seemed to be a fantasy. Yet, I realised I never felt as happy as I was when singing or creating art, so I finally got the confidence to pursue it upon finishing my studies.
I’ve now started releasing my own music, which has been exhilarating and so liberating, and working with some incredible people. The reception has been great so far. There’s a lot more to come and I’m excited for the world to see it!
Being a French and Korean singer, have you thought of ever writing your own songs in either languages?
Definitely, I’ve written songs in French that are yet to be released! I’d love to explore writing in different languages, even combining them within the same song. I think it’d actually be more reflective of how my thought process is. It’s fascinating (at least for a linguist!) to see how a feeling or an emotion that is universal in its sensation can be expressed so differently according to a language’s idiosyncrasies and cultural references.
What tips would you give to someone debuting in the music industry?
Keep knocking on those doors, one of them will eventually open. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Be authentic, hardworking, and stubborn—without being a jerk. If you don’t believe in yourself and have a clear idea of who you are as an artist, how do you expect others to?
What's your party trick?
Not sure if it counts as a trick, but I can most definitely fix you a strong drink!
On a typical day at work what would your routine look like?
No day is alike as it’ll depend on whether I have a session in the studio, a photo or video shoot, or if I’m just writing or recording at home. You very much make up your own schedule so it helps to be disciplined and flexible. Broadly speaking, I’ll try getting up early (despite being a night owl) and start off the day with some yoga or physical activity. I’ll answer emails and messages, get the admin aspects out of the way as soon as I can in order to focus on creating in the afternoon and evening. I like to meet up with friends and fellow creatives in the evening—corona-permitting—it helps keep me sane and inspired.
And finally, who are your biggest inspirations?
I’m inspired by artists whose songs I can’t stop listening to (so it’s an eclectic and ever-changing mix!); but some of my biggest and consistent sources of inspiration are Cher, Florence + The Machine, Jorja Smith, Sade, Masego, Lana del Rey and Frank Ocean.
