From Texas Roots to NYC Beats: Inside the Musical World of Susannah Joffe
I had the pleasure of interviewing Susannah Joffe, a Texas-born and raised singer unafraid of speaking about important issues such as politics, mental health, and family. Are you a fan of Ethel Cain or Big Thief? Then you´ll love this fresh new voice.
Nicolle: What was the first song you learned on guitar?
Susannah: The first song I learned on guitar was a Black Keys song, but I’m blanking on the name.
N: How did growing up in Texas influence your music?
S: I think growing up in Texas influenced the way I sing a lot. I use a lot of kind of folky / country elements when I sing like I use a lot of vocal flips.
N: At what age did you write your first song? What was it about?
S: My first song I wrote during COVID when I was 19, and it was about loving someone who is suicidal.
N: If you could pick someone to write a song with, who would it be?
S: I’d write a song with Adrienne Lenker from Big Thief because I think her writing is amazing, and she would teach me a lot.
N: I am obsessed with your song Deer in Headlights. What prompted you to write it?
S: I wrote Deer in Headlights when all the anti-choice legislation was bubbling up in the US, and Roe v Wade was overturned, I was just so pissed at the world, and the hypocrisy, and I wrote it when I was back home in Texas.
N: What influences you the most when writing new music?
S: Honestly, the world around me is what influences me most, which is why I love living in NYC.
N: What’s next for you? Can we expect more music in 2024?
S: I have lots of new music coming and awesome visuals, so stay tuned on my socials!
Susannah has a song called Stillborns and Six Lane Highways coming very soon and you can presave it here. You can find her on Instagram and on Spotify to stream her music and her EP album Your Mother´s Name. If you’re a California local you can catch her perform in San Francisco in June.
