Women in Construction: Changing the Face of the Industry

The construction industry has undergone significant transformation in recent times with many areas changing. One of the most notable ways that construction is changing is the number of women working in the industry, which has skyrocketed in recent years to transform what has historically been seen as a predominately male-led field. Keep reading to find out more about the rise of women in construction and what this means for the future.

How Many Women Are in Construction?

The amount of women in construction has skyrocketed since the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, there were just 41,000 women in construction in the UK. This number now stands at 340,000 last year, which works out to a staggering 728% increase. This is fantastic to see as it is making what has always been seen as a male-dominated industry one that is more open, inclusive, and diverse.

Starting Early

One of the ways that construction has become more balanced in recent times is by encouraging girls and women to consider construction as a viable career with university and teaching programs. This has helped many to see that construction is an industry where there are many transferable skills that can help them thrive in construction, such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Additionally, many of the other technical, hands-on skills can be learned.

Making Changes

There are also many changes taking place within the industry that are helping women to feel more confident, welcome, and comfortable in what has traditionally been a male-dominated work environment. This includes things like construction companies and building sites adding more facilities and work wear being alerted to a better fit for women. There is also construction clothing made for women, such as site work boots that can offer protection and comfort while working.

Importance of Diversity

Diversity is important in every industry. In construction, diversity is important for turning the industry into one that is open and supportive of everyone, no matter their gender, age, race, or background. In addition to the importance of diversity and inclusion, hiring a diverse workforce can bring wide-ranging benefits to a business. Diversity can bring new ideas and viewpoints to the table, improve brand reputation, and make it easier to attract new talent to the organization, among other benefits.

It is fantastic to see the construction industry changing and becoming one that is more open and inclusive. The sharp rise in women entering the industry in recent years has brought about significant change and transformed what has always been seen as a male-dominated industry. There is still a lot that needs to be done in construction and other industries, but it is easy to see construction becoming a viable and appealing career option for more women as it becomes more balanced, diverse, and supportive.
