How Can I Get Into Ketosis?

When people hear the term “ketosis”, they think it is a unique process. Not - it’s actually something that a normal metabolism is capable of doing. By having your body do this, you can burn body fat and possibly get help with things like type 2 diabetes and neurological effects.

Before you look up “keto coaching near me” on your phone or laptop, it’s good to know how you can do it.

Cut Out or Minimize Your Carbs

This is far from the only thing you can do to achieve ketosis, but it can play a big part. If you cut out carbs, then your body won’t store as much glucose, which will also lower your insulin levels. Then fatty acids will be released from your fat in your body.

The process continues with your liver then turning that fatty acid into things called ketones - acetone, acetoacetate, and beta-hydroxybutyrate. Your brain will use them to function. The amount needed to do this varies from person to person.

Be More Physically Active

Exercise and ketosis can be mutually beneficial to each other. That is because when you exercise while minimizing your carbs, your body is also running out of glycogen, and without the carbs that you normally eat restoring those levels, it can help your liver make ketones, which will enrich your muscles.

There is an initial trade-off to start, though. Your body will need anywhere between a week to a month to adapt to this, and your initial exercise performance may be below your previous standards. Once that time has passed, your body will likely operate at higher efficiency.

Eat More Healthy Fat

There are good fats to have and bad fats to have. If you are intent on getting into ketosis, then you want to have more fats - good ones. You may even have 80% of your daily caloric intake be from fats.

What kind of foods are those? Fish with high fat, like Albacore Tuna, Atlantic Herring, and Wild Salmon are an excellent source. Avocados, olives, sunflower seeds, and walnuts are also fantastic.

You can do other things like intermittent fasting, where you eat all your food in a short window each day, include coconut oil in your food, and be sure to watch your protein intake.

This is only a very basic introduction to ketosis. Entire books have been written about the subject. It’s a great start to exploring something that can make you healthy for life.
