How to be a more active and supportive part of your family

Families can be very complex elements of our lives, sometimes they are great and sometimes they make you feel horrible. It is something we all have to deal with and something we all need to work towards for a happier and more supportive circle of relatives. It can be hard sometimes seeing other happy families when yours may not be that, but you can break the cycle and work on being more positive for yourself and your own family or future family. Don’t let the things that made you unhappy as a child be something your own children have to go through.

Keep in contact as much as you can

One of the things you can look to do is be more aware of staying in contact. Life gets busy as we get older and as we start to have our own families and responsibilities it can sometimes feel impossible to fit other things into your schedule. Nevertheless, even if you make the effort from your end then you know you are being the bigger person. That said, if you find that certain people are toxic in a sense then you have every right to not have them in your life. It is just about making an effort with people who may just be as busy as you and forget to catch up. Otherwise, you may find that you only see each other on birthdays and occasions.

Remember and celebrate special occasions

A great thing about families is that you have a special group of people that you can spend time with and make amazing memories together. You can take advantage of the usual birthdays, anniversaries and the normal holidays like Christmas and new year. Make sure you put everything in your calendar so you don’t forget. If you can't visit them for any reason make it as special as you can, send them a card, present and even a balloon in the post. Video call them to say Happy Birthday just to make it more meaningful. You can even take advantage of awareness days to get together more often, you could celebrate pancake day, St Patrick's day, day of the dead and as many as you want.

Support them in times of need

Everyone goes through difficulties in life, some minor and some major. However, it is important to support your loved ones in times of need. If you find yourself in difficulties then you would want the love and support from your family and loved ones so always treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. Things happen in life where sometimes you need a bit of extra help and even an impartial component. You can look at trying family mediation to assist you and your family with any challenges that may develop while you are attempting to deal with things you or your family members may be going through.

Family is so important and being kept away from each other during the pandemic has shown just how much they mean to us.
