Artificial Intelligence at home and in schools: How can kids learn about AI?

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is changing the world, and fast. With AI concepts slow to appear on the school curriculum, it can be challenging for children to grasp the core concepts surrounding these technologies and how they work.

Artificial Intelligence and automated gadgets will surely shape multiple aspects of life for the next generation. With that in mind, it’s always worth knowing how to teach children about basic AI principles and how they can be used to their advantage.

Why should children learn about AI?

There’s a pragmatic side to learning about artificial intelligence. Even without knowing the basics, it’s still omnipresent in their day-to-day lives. From virtual assistants in smart homes to specific features on the video games that children play every day, automation is everywhere.

Children are exposed to AI-based devices so frequently that eventually, their fundamental understanding of intelligence could be challenged. And until children learn about the technologies behind AI, it’s impossible to know the limitations and risks of their interactions with it.

Teaching the principles and applications of AI will help children think critically about the technology they use, helping them to navigate new challenges safely. Along with teaching online safety in schools, courses should include valuable lessons on AI.

Our top four resources to help children learn about AI

1.     Crafting

For younger children only just starting their journey with technology, handcrafting makes an excellent approach. The most fundamental concepts can be explored through AI writing and storytelling tools, for example. You could work on a quick idea with your child or pupil, read the story to them, and then ask them to draw it out.

2.     Handheld projects

Learning by trial and error is critical when a child approaches a complex subject like automated technologies. Removing the pressure to succeed first time also paves the way for a growth mindset, allowing the learner to see the positive parts of their learning process and persevere for a resolution. Early introduction to small projects and technologies using PCB design software could be the most effective starting point.

3.     Online vlog channels

If your child learns best through listening, subscribing to an educational channel on YouTube could be the best possible way for them to approach topics including coding and artificial intelligence. And if a child finds and follows someone that they consider a role model, they’ll be more likely to try out new challenges and projects of their own.

4.     Computer puzzles

Lastly, there’s a myriad of free and accessible puzzles, games and resources available online. When children can get engaged on their own or with friends, online activities make an invaluable resource. And since most AI-powered technologies are associated with computers in some way, it only makes sense to deliver lessons across an interactive digital medium.

Always remember that your child’s safety is the biggest priority. Never leave young children unsupervised with small components or electronic devices, and if you’re sharing a computer, make sure to install sufficient antivirus and child-safe browser extensions or internet restrictions.
