Q&A with Nush Cope, co-presenter of Cheap Chat Podcast

Photographer: Rachel Sherlock

For those of you that haven’t already listened to Cheap Chat podcast, get downloading and listening STAT. It’s the perfect ‘working’ from home podcast that will have you chuckling all day long. Why you ask? Because Cheap Chat’s main focus is on dating stories, and this includes the good, the bad, and the downright laughable. Whether the Cheap Chat trio (Nush, Rume and Carlotta) are gabbing about birthday sex, faking orgasms, cheating or the whore complex, this is feminist, female banter that packs a punch.

I managed to have an informal chat to Nush Cope, one third of the Cheap Chat trio, to find out a little more as well as to learn more about Nush’s opinions on dating, mental health and pregnancy.

What made you want to start your podcast Cheap Chat with Carlotta and Rume? How did you guys meet?

It was actually Rume’s idea. Her and Carlotta have been friends for years. They wanted to start a podcast and were looking for someone else to join their conversation when her sister recommended me. We clicked straight away and got all got on like a house on fire!

You guys speak about dating and relationship advice, what’s the best piece of dating advice you would give single girls now?

Take time to become the best possible version of yourself. Once you are confident and happy in yourself the right person will come into your life. Don’t rely on anyone to make you happy, and don’t settle or chase anyone, I believe that everything happens for a reason.

What was your own worst date ever?

A guy who was catfish and didn’t look anything like his picture, he took me to Go Ape (the tree adventure place), in the middle of nowhere. I thought it was a cool date idea at first, but then when I couldn’t get home for hours I was stuck with him at his mums house where he tried to get me in bed and just have a cuddle. 🤢

Cheap Chat has had a few guests, including Chicken Shop Date’s, Amelia Dimoldenberg, who would be your absolute IDEAL guest to have on the podcast?

Ciara for sure. She went from being with a total f*ckboy (Future) to owning her shit, and finding the love of her life. All women need to hear her words of wisdom!

For those that don’t already know, you are over eight months pregnant. How are you feeling about becoming a mum?

Super excited. I mean, scared sh*tless for sure but mainly excited. There’s also a part of me where it hasn’t really sunk in yet that I am going to be responsible for another person’s life... for the rest of my life haha. Hopefully maternal instinct will kick in soon!

You post videos on your Youtube Channel I’m Pregnant, What Now? about mental health during pregnancy, is this something you feel passionate about and want to encourage people to talk about more?

Yes absolutely. The whole reason I started the channel was because I had a really rough first trimester and when I looked online to find women to relate to, I couldn’t find any. Pregnancy is a very lonely journey and I just wanted to create a community of women who feel like they’re not alone, by hearing the truth that pregnancy isn’t always amazing. If we’d all open up, we wouldn’t feel so isolated and alone.

What other women inspire you?

The women around me. My best friend, Fola, who is the most emotionally aware and available woman I know. Also my friend Kaz, who is so brave and always goes after whatever she wants in life to make herself happy!

What’s the weirdest food craving you’ve had whilst being pregnant?

Babybels...no idea why.

You quit your job to pursue your dreams and dumped an ex that broke your heart, how did that feel? And what advice would you give to women who are in a similar situation with jobs or exes?

In terms of jobs...I blame the system we live in. We are taught that you must get a stable job and work your way up and make as much money as possible. When the truth is actually that the most important thing is to do something that makes you happy. Life is short, and if you don’t love what you do then what’s the point? Be brave and confident in your abilities. Take a risk to do something you enjoy!

In terms of men...the same thing applies. Life is short. Plus what’s the point in being with someone that doesn’t respect you or treat you like a queen. As long as you know who you are and you value yourself, you’ll have the strength to put yourself first and do the right thing.

What’s next? Are there any plans after giving birth?

I am on a mission to prove that women can have it all. I refuse to be just Prawny’s (what I’m referring my baby as) mum and I refuse to just be a TV presenter. I will master the work/life balance. Not exactly sure how I’ll achieve that yet but watch this space and I’ll show you somehow!

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see Nush actually have it all and it definitely makes me think about having it all myself - in fact, we as women should all be aspiring to have it all - even if ‘it’ is sometimes a gigantic vat of wine gums (but that might just be me).
