Firstly, let’s clarify something.

Jean Milburn is the woman we should all aspire to be, outside of her romantic relationships.

While even our favourite sex therapists can’t have it all figured out, she can still inspire us in other aspects of our lives.

Jean is a woman who owns her sexuality, something women of all ages should be capable of and proud of doing. While it is fantastic to see her owning her sexuality, it is even better seeing Gillian Andersen portraying Jean as a middle-aged woman with grey hair and a child in high school who owns her sexuality. So many people think that women lose their sex life, or their appeal, once they pass the ripe old age of 35. Jean’s character defies this sentiment and it’s wonderful for young girls growing up, and women of Jean’s age to see on screen.

Everyone loves to see a portrayal of a good parent on TV, and they are few and far between. While sometimes overbearing is an impeccable mother, Jean’s character spends time with her son, listens to him as though he is his own person, cares for him with more than the bear minimum, and is always there when she’s needed. She allows Otis (her son) a place where he can be himself. Making a home that is open where he is able to feel loved, and understood.. Yes, she has had her issues with privacy in the past, and probably shouldn’t have written the book or had a fair few frisky moments with Jakob, but everybody makes mistakes. This is another thing that we could all learn from Jean - how to own your mistakes and take the steps towards fixing them.

Finally, something that everyone should aspire to be, whether they are a woman, gender non-conforming, or a man. Jean is good friend.

Jean is caring and compassionate towards her friends and those around her. She welcomes them into her life with grace and holds no area for judgment. Jean is the type of person anyone would be lucky to have as a friend, and thats someone we should all strive to be.
