The Source by Sarah Sultoon

★★★★★

The Source is an absorbing novel told through the parallel narratives of two young women, Carly and Marie. Carly, a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl lives in a dead-end town dominated by a military base. Her alcoholic mother is less than useless meaning that Carly is responsible for caring for her baby sister as well as herself. When her squaddie brother offers her a chance of escape, she believes that things will get better…

Junior TV journalist, Marie is working on a sex-trafficking story which is about to break, when New Scotland Yard reopens an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse within the military a decade earlier. Opening this case, leads to many questions that need to be asked, and even more that need to be answered.

Throughout the book, each chapter alternates between the stories of these two, and as it progresses these begin to become more and more intertwined. As a former CNN journalist, author Sarah Sultoon draws on her own experiences in the newsroom and working in the media to bring this thought-provoking story of resilience, power and survival that will keep you guessing throughout.

An impressive debut novel that is currently in development for TV with Lime Pictures.
